Pets and other Critters: Book Reveiw. Birds of Paradise

Two men spent?months?undercover sitting?up in trees to obtain pictures of Birds of Paradise.? Many of these birds have never been photographed before.? Tim Laman and Edwin Scholes? have produced a coffee table style book full of incredible images of Birds of Paradise.

Here's a cool trailer on the project with some action shots of Bird of Paradise.

Why are they called Birds of Paradise?

In the 16th century when Europeans first saw these unusual birds, they declared that they were so beautiful that they could only have come from?Heaven's paradise.

Some Bird of Paradise Facts

?- lifespan: up to? 30 years.?

-? diet:? mostly fruit, but also plants, spiders, insects, small reptiles

-? 39 species

-? Order?Passeriformes.??Group Paradisaeidae.? Closest relatives: crows and jays.

-? dimorphic- males and?females are distinctly different.? Males ornate, females drab.

-? males are polygnist.? He spreads his seed to as many females as possible.

-? females?have one brood per year, usually?one chick.??Female does all the nest building and rearing.

-? ?symbiotic mutualism.? The birds eat the fruit of the trees then plant?the fruit seeds when they poop.

-? live in mountainous forested areas in NE Australia, New Guinea and surrounding islands.

Male Birds of Paradise?devote their lives to displaying their virility to females.? Males often use the same tree stump or clearing as their display stage for many years.?

Variations seen in?Birds of Paradise species are not only in their feathering.? Different beak styles are numerous, apparently adaptations to better extract meat from?assorted fruits that represent the bulk of their diet.?

These birds live in areas full of food and with very few predators.? This frees up time for flexing ones feathers and singing songs of love.

Motion control keeps electric car's four wheels -- and four motors -- on the road

Jan. 23, 2013 ? It weighs half as much as a sports car, and turns on a dime -- so its no surprise that the electric car being developed at Ohio State University needs an exceptional traction and motion control system to keep it on the road.

With four wheels that turn independently, each with its own built-in electric motor and set of batteries, the experimental car is the only one of its kind outside of commercial carmakers' laboratories.

"It is considered one of the promising future vehicle architectures," said Junmin Wang, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and Director of the Vehicle Systems and Control Laboratory at Ohio State. "It would make a good in-city car -- efficient and maneuverable, with no emissions. Our task is to make a robust control system to keep it safe and reliable."

In a paper in the January 2013 issue of the journal Control Engineering Practice, his team described the car's ability to follow a specific trajectory.

In tests on good road conditions at the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio, the car followed a driver's desired path within four inches (10 cm). To test slippery road conditions, the researchers took the car to an empty west campus parking lot on a snowy day. There, the car maneuvered with an accuracy of up to eight inches (20 cm), and the vehicle traction and motion control system prevented "fishtailing" through independent control of the left and right sides of the car.

Wang characterized these results as more accurate than a conventional car, though the comparison is hard to make, given that conventional cars are much more limited in maneuverability by the transmission and differential systems that link the wheels together mechanically. The four independent wheels of the electric car give drivers greater control and more freedom of movement.

The experimental car also weighs half as much as a conventional car -- only 800 kg, or a little over 1,750 pounds -- because it contains no engine, no transmission, and no differential. The researchers took a commercially available sport utility vehicle chassis and removed all those parts, and added a 7.5 kW electric motor to each wheel and a 15 kW lithium-ion battery pack. A single electrical cable connects the motors to a central computer.

One hundred times a second, the onboard computer samples input data from the steering wheel, gas pedal and brake and calculates how each wheel should respond. Because the wheels are independent, one or more can brake while the others accelerate, providing enhanced traction and motion control.

In fact, a driver who is accustomed to conventional cars would have a difficult time driving a car of this experimental design, known as a "four-wheel independently actuated" (FIWA) car without the help of the vehicle motion and traction control system. With its ability to turn sharply and change direction very quickly, the car could be hard to control. Wang has tried it.

"Without the controller, it's very hard to drive. With the controller, it's quite nice -- quiet, and better control than commercial four-wheel drive," he said.

The main challenge for his team -- which consists of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students as well as a few local high school students -- is to make the whole traction and motion control system energy-efficient and fault-tolerant, so if one wheel, motor or brake malfunctions, the others can compensate for it and maintain safety. It's a situation analogous to a multi-engine plane losing an engine: the other engines have to adjust thrust and angle to keep the plane safe and on course.

Future work will concern the FIWA car's energy efficiency for increasing its travel range in urban environments, and optimizing the weight distribution in the car.

Wang estimates that we won't see a FIWA car on the road for another 5-10 years, as researchers continue to develop new algorithms to control the car more efficiently and add more safety features.

The coauthor on the paper was Rongrong Wang, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, and the team's high school participants came from the Columbus Metro School, a state of Ohio public STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) high school open to students from around the state.

This research was supported by Junmin Wang's awards from the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program (2009) and the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development Program (2012); the Honda-OSU Partnership program; and the OSU Transportation Research Endowment Program.

Report: Myanmar still recruits child soldiers

(AP) ? Myanmar is still recruiting and using child soldiers, despite embracing democratic reforms and a U.N. agreement to end the practice, a human rights group said Wednesday.

Child Soldiers International reports levels of child recruitment have declined, and 42 children have been released from Myanmar's army since the government signed the agreement last June, but the outlawed practice continues, due to a lack of political will to implement safeguards.

Myanmar is one of about two dozen countries worldwide found by the U.N. to violate international law on the rights of children in armed conflicts. Ending the use of child soldiers has been among the litany of reforms sought by the U.S. and other Western nations that have restored diplomatic ties with the Southeast Asian nation as it has begun to shift from five decades of oppressive military rule.

The government of President Thein Sein has shown willingness to reform by signing a joint action plan with the U.N., but the London-based rights group says authorities have failed so far to monitor army recruitment systematically, and recruitment patterns appear unchanged from the past decade.

"Military officers and informal recruiting agents continue to use intimidation, coercion, and physical violence to obtain new recruits, including under-18s," says the report, which is based on three research missions in Myanmar and along its border with Thailand, the latest in December.

The report says children are also in the ranks of army-controlled border guard forces and ethnic armed opposition groups that for the most part have reached cease-fires with the government after decades of fighting for more autonomy. It criticizes the government for refusing the U.N. and child protection agencies access to the ethnic groups to help end child recruitment.

The army, which is still waging a major offensive against ethnic Kachin rebels in the north of the country, has a constant demand for new recruits because of high desertion rates, the report says.

Children are targeted as they are easier to trick and more susceptible to pressure to enlist, it says. They are being recruited on their way into schools and when they leave home in search of work, or in railway stations, bus terminals and markets. A common tactic is to threaten children with prison for failing to produce a national identity card unless they sign up for the army.

The group said it received testimony from three child soldiers in May 2012 who had been forcibly recruited and deployed on the front line of fighting against the Kachin. One 16-year-old said he was made to fight but was very scared and just fired his gun in the air. He was later caught by the rebels. It also cites a case of a 13-year-old recruited into an ethnic Karen border guard force.

Myanmar officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the report Wednesday. Child Soldiers International said it spoke to some Myanmar officials for its research, but defense officials and others declined to be interviewed.

According to the report, the government has told the U.N. that the army rejected more than 400 army recruits as underage during the first nine months of 2011. It has disciplined more than 200 military personnel for involvement in underage recruitment since 2007 and nine have gone to prison.

The army is estimated to number between 350,000 and 400,000. There is no reliable estimate on the number of child soldiers.

Obama proceeds with Allen nomination as NATO commander in Europe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will proceed with General John Allen's nomination as NATO's supreme allied commander in Europe after the Pentagon cleared him of professional misconduct over emails to a Florida socialite, the White House said on Wednesday.

Allen, the outgoing commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, was ensnared in the scandal that prompted retired General David Petraeus to resign as CIA director last year after his affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, was exposed.

The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that an investigation launched in November had cleared Allen of any wrongdoing after looking into email exchanges between him and Jill Kelley, one of the women at the center of the Petraeus scandal.

"General Allen's nomination ... will proceed," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

"We hope the Senate will consider it in a timely manner. And, you know, we will press the Senate to do just that," Carney added.

Allen's nomination for the U.S. military's top job in Europe must be resubmitted to Congress because his original nomination expired at the end of the last congressional term, a Senate Armed Services Committee spokeswoman said.

Carney said he did not have a specific timetable for the next steps on Allen's nomination. Obama put the nomination on hold when the investigation was announced in November even as he expressed confidence in Allen's ability to serve out the final months of his command in Afghanistan.

Allen, who is married and has two daughters, has not spoken publicly since the results of the investigation were announced. He was described by an aide as pleased and focused on leading NATO forces in Afghanistan.

"He is grateful for the support he received throughout this process from his chain of command, friends, family and colleagues," an Allen spokesman, Major David Nevers, said.

Allen has been preparing options for Obama on the future U.S. military presence in Afghanistan once NATO declares the combat mission over at the end of 2014.

The White House is considering keeping between 3,000 and 9,000 troops in Afghanistan after 2014 - a lower range of options than those initially put forward by Allen.

The inquiry by the Defense Department's Inspector General centered on the emails between Allen and Kelley, a Tampa woman who knew Allen when he served as the No. 2 officer at the U.S. military's Tampa-based Central Command from July 2008 to June 2011.

Those emails surfaced when the FBI investigated Kelley's allegations of receiving anonymous, harassing emails from someone else about Petraeus. Those other emails led the FBI to uncover the affair between Petraeus and Broadwell.

Questions about the nature of the Kelley-Allen emails prompted Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to order a Pentagon investigation, a move that triggered speculation about their relationship.

Kelley, in a piece written with her husband Scott and published on the Washington Post website on Tuesday, said "the insinuation that Jill was involved in an extramarital affair is as preposterous as it is hurtful to our family."

Predicting the hits | The Ferris State Torch

Like pick?ing out Academy Award nom?i?nees at the begin?ning of the year, choos?ing break?out musi?cal acts for the next year is an exer?cise in both obvi?ous and the com?pletely unknown. Some of these are inevitable; oth?ers fall in the ?hope?ful? cat?e?gory. Anything could hap?pen. These are just a?few possibilities.

The Product
Ferris music indus?try man?age?ment junior Wayne Ganor said, ?I think in 2013 the band you?ll see start to rise up is a?band out of Port Huron called The Product. In 2012 they released their sec?ond EP called ?Still Alive,? which was made with the help of engineer-producer Brian Virtue (30 Seconds to Mars, Chevelle), and so far the band has released two sin?gles and music videos off the EP (?My Damage? and ?Light It?Up?).?

Kina Grannis
Kina Grannis won a?con?tract with Interscope through the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Contest, and has turned that into suc?cess?ful tour?ing and a?good amount of char?ity work. Ferris music indus?try man?age?ment sopho?more Jessica McLean said, ?I?m pretty excited to see what Kina Grannis will release this year. She is due for another album and I?know she?ll release some?thing great. She?s a?won?der?ful exam?ple of an inde?pen?dent?artist.?

Paper Lions
Canadian quar?tet Paper Lions seem poised to take the next step after a?few years of mod?est suc?cess, includ?ing East Coast Music Awards nom?i?na?tions and a?Vancouver Olympics per?for?mance. Ferris music indus?try man?age?ment sopho?more Travis Hodder said, ?The entire EP is very sim?i?lar to Mumford & Sons, although much more upbeat. Considering the cur?rent pop?u?lar?ity of Mumford & Sons, I?don?t feel it would be a?stretch to say that Paper Lions could enjoy equal suc?cess in the com?ing?year.?

Sky Ferreira
The basics of Sky Ferreira?s story will sound very sim?i?lar to Charli XCX?s: tal?ented, touted twenty year old has highly acclaimed EP and sin?gle, is set to blow up with a?2013 debut album. Having had her tele?vi?sion debut only a?few ago, Ferreira still has a?ways to go, but all the pieces are in place to make her one of the next indie/mainstream pop darlings.

Azelia Banks
Banks is the first of many artists on this list, fol?low?ing up buzz-garnering EPs with a?debut full length in 2013 (?Broke With Expensive Taste?). Dynamic and opin?ion?ated with killer flow and a?vicious tongue, the 21?year old out of Harlem makes news with antics both on mic and off (includ?ing a?feud with up-and-comer Angel Haze) in a ?no pub?lic?ity is bad pub?lic?ity? man?ner, and is set to com?pletely infil?trate main?stream music, if she hasn?t already.

Miguel
Frank Ocean may have been 2012?s R&B break?out, but Miguel wasn?t far behind with ?Kaleidoscope Dream,? which secretly gar?nered just as much crit?i?cal acclaim as ?Channel Orange.? While only three months out from ?Dream? and the pos?si?bil?ity of any 2013 mate?r?ial unknown, a?sin?gle catch?ing fire on the radio isn?t at all unlikely.

Haim
A?trendy pick for a?break?out band with a?nigh-unstoppable resume, Haim is a?young Los Angeles four piece (three of whom are sis?ters) mak?ing the kind of indie pop that lis?ten?ers will eat?up.

Charli XCX
Only twenty years old, England?s Charlotte Aitchison is poised to blow up when her debut album finally comes out. Often com?pared to such accom?plished, tal?ented artists as Robyn and Lykke Li and mas?ter?ing a?goth-infused pop sim?i?lar to that of Zola Jesus, Charli XCX already has a?hold on the hearts of many in the indie scene, and that num?ber could sky?rocket should the album?deliver.

Scientific fraud: Men worse than women

Men are more likely than women to commit scientific fraud, a new analysis of misconduct convictions reveals. And the urge to cheat spans the entire range of academic careers, from students to seasoned professors.

For the new study, published Tuesday in the journal mBio, scientists examined 228 cases of misconduct in the records of the United States Office of Research Integrity (ORI), a government agency that oversees research funded by federal, public health-related agencies. Part of the ORI's mission is to monitor investigations of charges such as fabrication of data and plagiarism.

"The big picture is not that most scientists are dishonest, it's the opposite," said study researcher Ferric Fang, a microbiologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine. "But on the other hand, a few scientists being dishonest is a very bad thing, because it casts doubt on the whole enterprise."

Fraud in science
As of May 2012, at least 2,047 biomedical and life science studies had been retracted by the journals that published them, meaning that the studies contained errors or fabrications that rendered their results meaningless.

Fang, along with Arturo Casadevall, a professor of medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York, and colleagues analyzed these studies and found, to their surprise, that 67.4 percent were retracted because of fraud, duplicate publication (essentially, researchers "double-dipping" to get a paper published twice) or plagiarism. [ Understanding the 10 Most Destructive Human Behaviors ]

There are no firm numbers about how much misconduct goes on in science, but Fang, Casadevall and their colleagues turned to the most complete database on the subject, which is run by the ORI. It's the best database in the world, Casadevall said, because the cases have been thoroughly investigated and documented.

Between 1994 and the present, the ORI investigated 228 cases of alleged misconduct. Of these, 215 were found to involve wrongdoing. In 40 percent of these cases, the guilty party was a trainee (a student or postdoctoral researcher). In 32 percent of cases, it was a faculty member, and in 28 percent of cases, the fraud was committed by technicians, study coordinators or other lab staff.

"We originally thought that misconduct was going to be a problem primarily of trainees or people starting out," Casadevall told LiveScience. "We were surprised to find that, in fact, a lot of them were quite established."

Gendered misconduct
Another key finding was the gender schism in fraud. Even given that men outnumber women in the upper echelons of science, males committed more of the fraud than would be expected. The gap appeared on every rung of the career ladder given the relative proportion of men and women at each step.

Among research staff, 43 percent of those committing misconduct were male. Among students, men made up 58 percent of transgressors. That number rose to 69 percent among postdoctoral researchers and to 88 percent of faculty. [ Oops! 5 Retracted Science Results of 2012 ]

Among the 72 faculty members who committed fraud, only nine were female, the researchers found. That's one-third of what would be expected if the genders were committing fraud at the same rates.

It's not clear why the gender gap exists, Casadevall said. Men are generally known to take more risks than women, which could play a role. Additionally, the researchers can't rule out the possibility that women commit misconduct as frequently as men, but don't get caught.

The researchers did find, however, that the proportion of men and women investigated for fraud was similar to the proportion found guilty, Fang said. So the investigation process itself does not appear gender-biased. ?

Stiff competition for research funding, jobs and scientific awards is likely behind the urge to cheat, Fang said. In the 1960s, 60 percent of researchers who applied for a standard federal research grant won that grant. Today, the chance of success is only 18 percent.

"It's become extraordinarily competitive," Fang told LiveScience. ?

That doesn't mean that cheating scientists are off the hook ethically, he said, but the environment of science likely contributes to the problem. Among faculty, almost all misconduct recorded by the ORI involved grants or papers, while among trainees and lab staff, the motivations appear to involve working in the "pressure cooker" of a lab where results are expected. The pattern suggests that principal investigators in charge of labs need to take heed of the climate they're creating, Fang said.

"Even without being a crook, you can be a principal investigator who, under pressure, may be creating pressures on your people to generate certain results," he said.

The Ins And Outs Of Taking A Payday Loan - Finance

A lot of people find themselves in need of fast cash and get cash advances. Due to the tough economy and increasing product prices, people are being forced to sacrifice some things. Tough financial problems is one of the primary reasons to get a payday loan. The following article offers many tips and techniques concerning cash advances.

Opt for a company that posts all fees along with their interest rate. If you feel that a company is not being clear and honest about their fees, seek out another company that will carefully explain their procedures. You will pay hefty fees if you do not have enough money in your account on the due date. So, if this is the case, call the loan company beforehand and ask for an extension.

Cash advances normally need to be paid back in two weeks. If you find yourself unable to repay your loan within that time frame, then you should contact the lender as soon as possible. A lot of establishments use a roll over option that could allow you to pay the loan at a later date but you may incur fees.

Verify any guarantees your payday lending company may put forth. Many cash advances companies have unscrupulous policies. They know you can?t pay off the loan, but they lend to you anyway. Many times the guarantees that you are promised come with fine print that allows the company to easily get out of their promise.

Payday loans are, by design, granted quickly and with relatively little hassle. The downside is the expense of the loan. To get money for a smaller fee or for free, it?s a good idea to ask your loved ones if they have money to spare. Doing this can save you some money and get the money you need.

Steer clear of lenders that charge fees in excess of 20 percent of your loan principal. Payday loan fees are higher than fees for other loan products, but more than 20% is highway robbery, even for payday cash advances.

As you contemplate whether or not you need the payday loan, make sure you?re positive you can repay the amount within three weeks. If you require more money that what you can repay in that period of time, find out what other choices you have. There may be other companies that are willing to give you extra time to repay the money you owe.

Payday Loan

Getting a payday loan can be quite serious. If mishandled, you can cause problems with your credit or your bank. Never think of a payday loan as instant money. Payday loans should not be thought of as extra cash, as you can go to other places for this.

When you are completing an application for a payday loan, be sure to include all the necessary documents for them to complete the transaction. Forgetting a single document can delay the entire process. A two day delay can make the difference for you, as time is essential.

Consider all your alternatives prior to signing up for payday lending. Maybe a friend can loan you some money or perhaps you can negotiate payment flexibility with creditors. Cash advances are best viewed as emergency last resorts. Of course, it is best to have emergency reserve funds built up instead.

Anyone who is considering getting a payday loan would be wise to ensure that the lender is licensed by the state. Every state has their own laws and licensing. For whatever state you reside, the lender you choose must be licensed in that state.

Payday Loan

Take caution when using automatic bill pay systems if you are using payday loan services. Some lenders will automatically renew your payday loan to cover what has not been paid yet; fees will quickly add up and ruin you. The initial contract of your loan may allow for this. By your loan automatically rolling over each due date, it can be easy to forget to repay the loan, resulting in extremely high fees. Educate yourself about payday cash advances.

Pay attention to the fees that you will be charged if you get a payday loan. You may be in a hurry to get the money, but to save yourself from further debt down the road, be sure to check into the fees before signing anything. Make certain that you?ll be able to pay back the principle as well as any accumulated fees.

Don?t do business with payday lenders who do not make direct deposits. Generally, the funds will show up into your bank account within one day. This is extremely convenient, and it prevents the risk of losing tons of borrowed money.

Besides the interest charges and possible penalty fees that could be assessed by your lender, remember that a payday loan is also capable of overdrawing your bank account. Bounced checks can be very expensive when added to the high cost of payday loans on their own.

Payday Loan

If you are like most people, using a payday loan service is your only option to avoid financial problems. Be aware of your options now and later so that you can look into payday loans. Apply the advice from this article to help you decide if a payday loan is the right option for you.

Sex with an Ex Common Among Young Adults: Study

Having sex with an ex seems to be a fairly typical part of the breakup process for young adults, a new study shows.

But the behavior could be risky, pushing former partners into emotionally complicated territory where safe-sex measures are likely to be cast aside, researchers say.

The study's authors collected data on 792 "emerging adults" ages 17 to 24, who had been part of a longitudinal survey (meaning scientists followed them through time) in Lucas County, Ohio, which includes the city of Toledo. All had been in a relationship within the past two years.

The researchers found that nearly half (44 percent) had broken up and gotten back together with a girlfriend or boyfriend. Among those who had rekindled a flame, 53 percent said sex was part of the reconciliation. Racial minorities in particular were more likely to reconcile and have sex with an ex, the study found.

This so-called "relationship churning" is far more common among young people than married adult couples, the researchers say. This could reflect the general instability and romantic exploration that are characteristic of emerging adulthood, though the team warns that such behavior could have negative emotional consequences.

"Having sex with an ex could put people in a position of technically being broken up, but still emotionally connected," the authors wrote in an article published in the Journal of Adolescent Research in November 2012.

"Those who stay in contact following a breakup continue to feel the pain of the breakup more intensely and may have more difficulty moving on. Previous research found that college students who had sex with their exes mostly described this as a 'difficult or negative event.'"

The behavior is also risky from a health perspective. Previous research has shown that condom use is high at the beginning of relationships but tends to drop over time. Though sex with an ex might be treated as a casual encounter, exes might be less likely to use a condom or take the safe-sex precautions they would with a less familiar partner.

Senior Democrat says Senate to finally pass a budget

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Democrats for the first time in more than three years will pass a budget, a senior Democratic lawmaker said on Sunday, fulfilling a basic task that Republicans have been urging them to do.

Senator Charles Schumer said, however, the spending plan will include proposed new revenue despite Republican warnings that they will not go along with any more tax increases.

"We're going to do a budget this year and it is going to have revenue in it, and Republicans ought to get used to that," Schumer of New York, the Senate's No. 3 Democrat, told NBC's "Meet the Press."

President Barack Obama's Democrats control the Senate, but have not passed a budget since 2010 amid disagreements within the party over possible spending cuts, particularly in entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security.

This has drawn the ire of Republicans who accuse them of a dereliction of duty that has undermined efforts to reduce spending and the U.S. debt.

Washington is expected to reach the limit of its $16.4 trillion borrowing power by early March, and lifting the debt ceiling will allow the federal government to continue its work uninterrupted.

Republican leaders in the House of Representatives, in a major concession on Friday, said they would be willing to raise the debt limit for three months and, at the same time, drop their demand that any increase in the government's borrowing power be matched in spending cuts.

But Republicans said they would require the Senate to finally pass a budget that could include spending reductions as well as changes in the tax code.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, appearing on NBC with Schumer, called the House Republican plan "a step in the right direction" and accused the Democratic-led Senate of not doing its job.

Schumer called the House Republican offer "a major victory" for Obama, who has vowed to refuse to negotiate with Congress on the debt limit.

Besides, Schumer said, "We need a budget .... It's a great opportunity to get us some more revenues."

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said he is ready to focus on spending cuts in any budget negotiations, but considers tax increases a closed matter. The White House had said it would accept the three-month plan so long as it was not conditioned on spending cuts.

After the deadline for the debt ceiling increase, Congress faces a March 1 deadline to avert automatic spending cuts and a March 27 expiration of funding for government agencies and programs that could result in a partial federal shutdown.

A three-month debt limit extension would add a further deadline in April or May.

The recent separate deal between Congress and the White House to avert "the fiscal cliff" of automatic tax increases on most Americans and severe spending cuts imposed a tax hike on many of the wealthiest Americans.

It renewed most tax cuts enacted by Republican President George W. Bush, but allowed those tax cuts on families with incomes of more than $450,000 to expire.

Readers Write: Zero Dark Thirty fails to take moral stand; Founding Fathers' compromise on faith

Letters to the Editor for the weekly print issue of January 21, 2013: Films like Kathryn Bigelow's?Zero Dark Thirty should take a better moral stand on torture. America's Founding Fathers knew the art of compromise ? even on issues of faith.

Films must take moral stand on torture

It was refreshing to read movie critic Peter Rainer's principled opinion on Kathryn Bigelow's movie "Zero Dark Thirty" ("Tasty fan fare: our critic's picks from 2012," Dec. 31, 2012 & Jan. 7, 2013). Mr. Rainer rightly says the film's "torture scenes, and their consequences, are calculatedly deficient in any political context."

Unfortunately, there will always be times when detainees won't be treated as humanely as they should be treated. But Americans should never sanction institutionalized and premeditated cruelty against those who have been restrained and thus pose no immediate threat to their fellow humans. To go the next step and glamorize such behavior without taking a moral stand on it is unconscionable.

Founders, faith, and compromise

The Dec. 24 cover heading "The New Face of Faith" and the photograph of Americans at prayer are connected in my mind with the commentary by Stephen W. Stathis in the same issue, "Let's learn to compromise as the Founders did." How to balance a belief in God with religious freedom was on everyone's mind at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787. Many of those present would speak personally of providence and the hand of God, but they did not put any name for God in America's written Constitution.

At this convention, Benjamin Franklin spoke in June of the "divine protection" that had been present at the time of the Revolution. He then suggested that each day of the convention start with a prayer. Only two or three of the 55 delegates agreed with him. A public prayer was not said.

However, in 1774 at the first session of the Continental Congress, Samuel Adams moved that a prayer be said the next day by the Rev. Jacob Duch?, an Episcopal clergyman, and his motion passed. Duch? did give a prayer the next day. Thus America's Founders compromised on the prayer question and continued to do so in different ways during that crucial time in US history.

Epigenetics explains rheumatism? Genes and their regulatory 'tags' conspire to promote rheumatoid arthritis

Jan. 20, 2013 ? In one of the first genome-wide studies to hunt for both genes and their regulatory "tags" in patients suffering from a common disease, researchers have found a clear role for the tags in mediating genetic risk for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an immune disorder that afflicts an estimated 1.5 million American adults. By teasing apart the tagging events that result from RA from those that help cause it, the scientists say they were able to spot tagged DNA sequences that may be important for the development of RA. And they suspect their experimental method can be applied to predict similar risk factors for other common, noninfectious diseases, like type II diabetes and heart ailments.

In a report published in Nature Biotechnology Jan. 20, the researchers at Johns Hopkins and the Karolinska Institutet say their study bridges the gap between whole-genome genetic sequencing and diseases that have no single or direct genetic cause. Most genetic changes associated with disease do not occur in protein-coding regions of DNA, but in their regulatory regions, explains Andrew Feinberg, M.D., M.P.H., a Gilman scholar, professor of molecular medicine and director of the Center for Epigenetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences. "Our study analyzed both and shows how genetics and epigenetics can work together to cause disease," he says.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating disease that causes inflammation, stiffness, pain and disfigurement in joints, especially the small joints of the hands and feet. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease, meaning that the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, an assault led primarily by white blood cells. According to Feinberg, several DNA mutations are known to confer risk for RA, but there seem to be additional factors that suppress or enhance that risk. One probable factor involves chemical "tags" that attach to DNA sequences, part of a so-called epigenetic system that helps regulate when and how DNA sequences are "read," how they're used to create proteins and how they affect the onset or progress of disease.

To complicate matters, Feinberg notes, the attachment of the tags to particular DNA sequences can itself be regulated by genes. "The details of what causes a particular sequence to be tagged are unclear, but it seems that some tagging events depend on certain DNA sequences. In other words, those tagging events are under genetic control," he says. Other tagging events, however, seem to depend on cellular processes and environmental changes, some of which could be the result, rather than the cause, of disease.

To tease apart these two types of tagging events, the researchers catalogued DNA sequences and their tagging patterns in the white blood cells of more than 300 people with and without one form of RA.

The team then began filtering out the tags that did not appear to affect RA risk. For example, if tags were seen on the same DNA sequence in those with and without RA, it was assumed that the tags at those sites were irrelevant to the cause or development of the disease. Then, from among the RA-relevant tags, they narrowed in on tags whose placement seemed to be dependent on DNA sequence. Finally, they made sure that the DNA sequences identified were themselves more prevalent in patients with RA. In this way, they created a list of DNA sequences associated with altered DNA tagging patterns, both of which were associated with RA.

Ultimately, the team identified 10 DNA sites that were tagged differently in RA patients and whose tagging seemed to affect risk for RA. Nine of the 10 sites were within a region of the genome known to play an important role in autoimmune diseases, while the 10th was on a gene that had never before been associated with the disease. "Since RA is a disease in which the body's immune system turns on itself, current treatments often involve suppressing the entire immune system, which can have serious side effects," Feinberg says. "The results of this study may allow clinicians to instead directly target the culpable genes and/or their tags."

"Our method allows us to predict which tagging sites are most important in the development of a disease. In this study, we looked for tagging sites under genetic control, but similar tags can be triggered by environmental exposures, like smoking, so there are many applications for this type of work," says Yun Liu, Ph.D., a lead researcher on the project.

The study also may shed light on how evolution works, explains Feinberg. "It seems that natural selection might not simply be selecting for an individual's current fitness level but also for the adaptability of future generations given an unknown future. We think that certain genetic sequences may be biologically beneficial and conserved over time because they increase the amount of variation found in tagging patterns, giving individuals a greater chance of adapting to environmental changes."

Home Improvement Problems ? Insights - Coast Business Directory

If it is done right, a remodeling project can add tremendous value to your home. Completing these projects takes time, patience, and money. In this article we will share with you some of the best time and money-saving tips for completing your next home improvement project.

When getting ready to prime a room that is going to be painted, have your primer tinted so that it is the same color as the paint you are using. The primer will still do its job, but instead of needing three coats of paint, your walls will require only two.

If you do not know how to do anything involved with your home improvement project, take some time and go to the local home improvement store and ask. You may feel like driving down to the home improvement store is a waste of time, but the time you save from not having to re-do a bad job is well worth it.

It is important to call a contractors insurance company and verify that they are in fact insured before you allow them to do any home improvement job for you. Some contractors will keep a card that is no longer effective and try to trick the homeowner into thinking that they still have insurance when they do not.

If your front door has to endure torrents of hot weather, make sure to choose an oil based paint instead of latex to prevent the paint from peeling off. A peeling front door is rather unsightly, so invest some money in high quality oil based paint to keep your door looking fresh in the heat.

If you are planning on painting a room as part of a home improvement project, you can save money by accurately estimating the amount of paint you will need. One gallon of paint will cover about 350 square feet of wall space, unless you are painting drywall, which absorbs more paint. An accurate estimate can prevent you from overbuying paint, which once mixed in a specific color generally can?t be returned. Browse Why Not Try THIS Out for current suggestions.

Listen to a contractor when you discuss your home improvement project and pay attention to what he says. If he gently lets you know an idea is folly, or asks you questions to get a better understanding of your needs, then he?s probably a great contractor. Also, see if he?s listening to you or if he?s just trying to get you to do what he envisions.

You have now learned the exact definition of home improvement, and been given some wonderful tips on what to do when improving your house. Have fun with any project that you engage in. Any time you improve the way your house looks, coming home after a long day at work will be a more enjoyable experience.

DNP Pandora cranked out over 13 billion hours of music in 2012

Springing into the new year, internet radio heavyweight Pandora has released some of its major statistics from 2012. The company states that 1.6 billion personalized radio stations were created and that it played over 13 billion hours of music. These hefty stats translate to the service's users listening to over one million different songs from more than 100,000 artists. Wrapping up last year's scorecard, around 10,000 artists reached about 250,000 unique listeners. While these numbers are impressive, we can't help but wonder how many audio commercials had to be endured so people could continue listening to countless hours of One Direction. In any case, we're sure it was worth it.

ASUS in talks with Microsoft about making Windows Phone hardware, has floated idea of Windows Padfone

ASUS logo Transformer Prime

So far we've seen manufacturers like Nokia, HTC, Samsung and Huawei release Windows Phone 8 hardware into the world, and today another company revealed that it wants a piece of the Live Tile action. Benson Lin, corporate VP of mobile devices at ASUS, today revealed to The Wall Street Journal that his firm is interested in creating Windows Phone 8 devices. Lin explained that ASUS is currently in talks with Microsoft about a Windows Phone 8 licensing agreement, going on to say that ASUS has floated the idea of a Windows-powered Padfone. "With our Padfone concept, the phone plus tablet, I think it makes sense for Windows 8," Lin explained. He added that ASUS is in talks with U.S. carriers about bringing its smartphones stateside by 2014.

ASUS has been focusing pretty heavily on Android as of late, introducing a pair of Padfones as well as a range of tablets, including the Transformer line and Google's Nexus 7. It'd be pretty interesting to see what the company would do with a Windows Phone handset, and it could be good for Microsoft to add another manufacturer to Club WP8.

What is still a mystery is how a Windows-based Padfone would work, because while the regular Padfone runs the same version of Android in both the smartphone and tablet modes, there aren't any Windows Phone 8 tablets or Windows RT/8 phones. Of course, Lin also noted that "there is no target timeline" for ASUS's Windows Phone plans, so perhaps something will change in the future that would make a Windows Padfone a possibility. Given ASUS's history with Android, would you be interested in a Windows Phone product from the company?

Big events, big crowds: Organizers brace for the flu

This weekend will be big for movie buffs, football fans and Barack Obama. But as Americans flock to the Sundance Film Festival, the NFL playoffs and the Presidential Inauguration, the weekend could also be big for the flu.

About 35,000 Americans have been sickened by an early and nasty wave of influenza, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And while the outbreak appears to be abating, flu activity is still widespread.

"Our biggest concern is people coming in asymptomatic but carrying the virus," said Rob Allen, chief executive officer of Park City Hospital in Park City, Utah, the home of Sundance.

CLICK HERE to see 10 Sundance movies worth watching.

Utah is one of 33 states reporting high levels of influenza activity. And Park City, home to roughly 40,000 people, will more than double its population this weekend as actors, director, producers and fans fill its hotels, restaurants and theaters.

"We have 50,000 people coming in, potentially bringing with them flu from their areas," said Allen, who partnered with local businesses to distribute hand sanitizer as visitors arrive. "If they practice good hand hygiene, hopefully they won't spread it so we can keep it isolated."

The flu virus spreads through microscopic respiratory droplets that travel six feet in a cough or a sneeze and survive on skin and other surfaces.

"And influenza can be spread by someone who's not yet sick," said Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. "They'll become sick tomorrow, but today they're emitting the virus as they exhale."

The best protection against the flu, according to the CDC, is the flu shot. This year's vaccine guards against three widespread strains of the virus and is 62 percent effective.

"We recognize that the vaccine is not 100 percent effective, but it's the foundation on which all other protection is built," said Schaffer.

CLICK HERE to see four flu shot myths busted.

Frequent hand washing and the use of hand sanitizer can also guard against the virus. The Georgia Dome ? home of the Atlanta Falcons and Sunday's National Football Conference championship football game ? has hand sanitizer pumps at every entry gate.

"That's standard policy for us," said Jason Kirksey, a spokesman for the 70,000-seat stadium. "With any event we have here, the safety and security of our fans is our number one priority, and that includes protection from any kind of airborne disease."

But football fans should still fight the urge to high-five and hug, according to Schaffner.

"School children are now taught that during an influenza outbreak, handshakes are out," he said, describing how flu-fearing students are bumping elbows in lieu of high-fives. "But at exciting and emotional events, it's hard to resist. So get vaccinated and try not to hug someone who's coughing or sneezing."

Sunday's Presidential Inauguration is expected to draw 800,000 people to Washington, D.C., where the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will man medical stations along the National Mall.

"Our advice for the inauguration is the same advice for a day-to-day basis," said HHS spokeswoman Elleen Kane. "Make sure you get the flu shot; if you cough or sneeze, do it into your elbow; wash your hands frequently and keep them away from your nose and mouth; and if you feel sick, stay home."

"It's pretty hard to protect yourself from the flu when you are in a crowd," said ABC News' chief health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser. "Sure, you can use hand sanitizer to clean your hands. But when the person next to you lets go with a big sneeze or a cough, you are sunk."

And it's not just the crowded events, according to Schaffner. "It's the travel to and from the events," he said, describing how packed airplanes and busy airports can teem with germs. "There's only so much you can do when you're in 13C and someone's sneezing in 13B. It's an unlucky row."

So while the weekend will be big, it's not worth risking the health of those around you, according to Besser.

"If you have a fever or you are just getting over the flu, stay home," he said. "I know it's hard to do when it's an event you've really been waiting for, but it's the right thing to do."
