Google adds street views inside Japan nuclear zone

TOKYO (AP) ? Concrete rubble litters streets lined with shuttered shops and dark windows. A collapsed roof juts from the ground. A ship sits stranded on a stretch of dirt flattened when the tsunami roared across the coastline. There isn't a person in sight.

Google Street View is giving the world a rare glimpse into one of Japan's eerie ghost towns, created when the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami sparked a nuclear disaster that has left the area uninhabitable.

The technology pieces together digital images captured by Google's fleet of camera-equipped vehicles and allows viewers to take virtual tours of locations around the world, including faraway spots like the South Pole and fantastic landscapes like the Grand Canyon.

Now it is taking people inside Japan's nuclear no-go zone, to the city of Namie, whose 21,000 residents have been unable to return to live since they fled the radiation spewing from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant two years ago.

Koto Naganuma, 32, who lost her home in the tsunami, said some people find it too painful to see the places that were so familiar yet are now so out of reach.

She has only gone back once, a year ago, and for a few minutes.

"I'm looking forward to it. I'm excited I can take a look at those places that are so dear to me," said Naganuma. "It would be hard, too. No one is going to be there."

Namie Mayor Tamotsu Baba said memories came flooding back as he looked at the images shot by Google earlier this month.

He spotted an area where an autumn festival used to be held and another of an elementary school that was once packed with schoolchildren.

"Those of us in the older generation feel that we received this town from our forbearers, and we feel great pain that we cannot pass it down to our children," he said in a post on his blog.

"We want this Street View imagery to become a permanent record of what happened to Namie-machi in the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster."

Street View was started in 2007, and now provides images from more than 3,000 cities across 48 countries, as well as parts of the Arctic and Antarctica.

Common gene variants explain 42% of antidepressant response

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Antidepressants are commonly prescribed for the treatment of depression, but many individuals do not experience symptom relief from treatment. The National Institute of Mental Health's STAR*D study, the largest and longest study ever conducted to evaluate depression treatment, found that only approximately one-third of patients responded within their initial medication trial and approximately one-third of patients did not have an adequate clinical response after being treated with several different medications. Thus, identifying predictors of antidepressant response could help to guide the treatment of this disorder.

A new study published in Biological Psychiatry now shares progress in identifying genomic predictors of antidepressant response.

Many previous studies have searched for genetic markers that may predict antidepressant response, but have done so despite not knowing the contribution of genetic factors. Dr. Katherine Tansey of Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London and colleagues resolved to answer that question.

"Our study quantified, for the first time, how much is response to antidepressant medication influenced by an individual's genetic make-up," said Tansey.

To perform this work, the researchers estimated the magnitude of the influence of common genetic variants on antidepressant response using a sample of 2,799 antidepressant-treated subjects with major depressive disorder and genome-wide genotyping data.

They found that genetic variants explain 42% of individual differences, and therefore, significantly influence antidepressant response.

"While we know that there are no genetic markers with strong effect, this means that there are many genetic markers involved. While each specific genetic marker may have a small effect, they may add up to make a meaningful prediction," Tansey added.

"We have a very long way to go to identify genetic markers that can usefully guide the treatment of depression. There are two critical challenges to this process," said Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry. "First, we need to have genomic markers that strongly predict response or non-response to available treatments. Second, markers for non-response to available treatments also need to predict response to an alternative treatment. Both of these conditions need to be present for markers of non-response to guide personalized treatments of depression."

"Although the Tansey et al. study represents progress, it is clear that we face enormous challenges with regards to both objectives," he added. "For example, it does not yet appear that having a less favorable genomic profile is a sufficiently strong negative predictor of response to justify withholding antidepressant treatment. Similarly, there is lack of clarity as to how to optimally treat patients who might have less favorable genomic profile.."

Additional research is certainly required, but scientists hope that one day, results such as these can lead to personalized treatment for depression.

Trailblazing TV journalist Barbara Walters to retire in 2014

(Reuters) - Pioneering journalist Barbara Walters plans to retire in May 2014 after more than five decades as one of the most prominent figures on U.S. television, a source familiar with her plans said on Thursday.

Walters, 83, is expected to announce her retirement to viewers herself in the coming weeks, the source said.

"It was very much her decision. I think she will best explain it herself," the source told Reuters.

ABC News executives declined to comment.

Walters, the creator and host of ABC's all-women talk show "The View," had suffered health issues recently, including fainting and hitting her head in January, and then was diagnosed with chicken pox, causing her to miss more than a month of work.

Walters is best known as one of the top interviewers on U.S. television, counting an array of world leaders as subjects, including Cuba's Fidel Castro, Britain's Margaret Thatcher, Saddam Hussein of Iraq and every U.S. president since Richard Nixon.

She got her start in television journalism in 1961 as a writer on NBC's "Today," a show that she would later co-anchor.

U.N. hopes chemical arms team deploys to Syria soon: envoys

By Louis Charbonneau

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations hopes that a team investigating allegations about the use of chemical weapons in Syria's civil war will deploy to the country as early as next week, U.N. diplomatic sources said on Wednesday.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday named Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom to head the U.N. team.

The United Nations said last week it would investigate Syrian allegations that rebels used chemical arms in an attack near the northern city of Aleppo, though Western countries want a probe of two additional rebel claims about the use of such arms. The opposition says the government carried out all three alleged chemical attacks.

Several U.N. diplomatic sources said on condition of anonymity the Ban hopes the team will arrive in Syria next week, though that may not be possible since the experts need to be assembled and approved and the investigation's mandate clarified.

"Whenever they get there, it will be the earliest possible date for them to arrive," a U.N. official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said Syria has accepted Sellstrom as the head of the investigative team and that the logistics and composition of the team were still being worked out.

"Of course, we hope the Syrians don't play games and prevent the team from accessing all sites of alleged chemical weapons incidents," a Western diplomat said.

Nesirky said the United Nations was still speaking with Syria about access for the team.

"It is obvious that to do this work you need unfettered access and that is why the secretary-general has underscored that in his communications (with Syria)," Nesirky said.

Syrian Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari was not immediately available for a comment.

The inspection team will be composed of around eight to 10 experts, mostly chosen by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague, U.N. sources said. The World Health Organization will also support the team.

The OPCW oversees implementation of the Convention on Chemical Weapons, an international treaty aimed at eliminating such arms. Syria is a not a signatory of the convention.

"DETERRENT EFFECT"

Russia said earlier this week that Russian and Chinese experts should be on the team, but diplomats said none of them will be from a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - but are expected to come from Nordic countries, Latin America and Asia.

The inspection team will be based in Beirut, they said, adding that its goal is simply to establish whether chemical weapons were used in Syria, not to say who used them. That is to ensure the neutrality of the mission, the sources said.

If an investigation adds credibility to the rebels' claims that the government has used chemical weapons, it would represent another blow to Assad's efforts to retain power. If it turned out the rebels have used them, it could make countries even more reluctant to support the rebels with money and arms.

Ban said last week that the investigation would initially focus on the Aleppo incident, in which the government and rebels accuse each other of firing a missile laden with chemicals, killing 26 people.

But he has told the council that he intends to broaden the investigation. In a letter to the Security Council last Friday, Ban said he had asked Britain, France and Syria for further information on the other alleged chemical attacks "with a view to verifying any alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria."

Western officials say there is no hard evidence of a chemical weapons attack, but there are signs that such arms have been used repeatedly in Syria. Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told reporters on Tuesday that he submitted "further information" about those attacks to Ban's office as requested.

Diplomats and U.N. officials said they hoped the chemical inspection team would have a "deterrent effect" on anyone considering using chemical weapons in Syria.

If it is confirmed that chemical weapons were used in Syria, it would be the first use of such arms in the two-year-old Syrian conflict, which the United Nations says has cost 70,000 lives.

Contacting A Passport Agency For Addressing All Passport Related ...

There are many questions that come to the mind regarding passports. Some of the most common questions among them are how to apply for a passport, where to get a passport, how to renew a passport and so on. These queries will come to the mind of any person who is dealing with passport and passport issues for the first time. Rules and conditions of getting passports vary from one country to another and these are mainly decided by the Ministry of State in the country. In USA there are many states and each state has different rules and regulations. Though some of the basic things remain the same in almost all the states, there might be differences in some issues.

Applying for a new passport

Applying for new passports has become easier and highly convenient. There is no need for people to stand in long queues to get passport forms and then submit the filled forms. Now these forms are available online. If you are not confident of completing all the formalities by yourself for getting a passport, you can get in touch with an agency that deals with passport related issues. The agency will take some fees and help you in getting the passport. However, whether you apply on your own or via an agency, you need to fill up the application form by providing all the necessary data. See that all the provided information are correct. Some documents also need to be attached to the form for evidences. A fee for the same has to be given as well.

Renewing a passport

Every passport has a validity date. Most of the passports for adults are valid for a period of 10 years. For minors, the period of validity is for 5 years in majority of the cases. After this period, the passport needs to be renewed so that its validity is maintained. There is a formal process of passport renewal. This also requires filling up of a renewal form and submitted. A processing fee is also charged from the person. If you are planning to get the passport renewed via an agency, you can go forward with that as well. The agency will complete all the formalities and help you in getting the renewed passport. The fee will depend on the time given to the agency for getting the renewed passport. Charges for emergency services are higher than normal services.

There are many agencies that help in getting a passport or help in getting passport renewal. It is very important to choose the right agency for the job as there are many fraud agencies as well. Check the authenticity and genuineness of the agency before hiring their services for the passport issues.

Beware of fake Homeland Security emails

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Thursday warned computer users to beware of fake emails they may receive from hackers claiming to be from the Department of Homeland Security and demanding money to reinstate use of their computer.

Homeland Security's U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, published an alert on its website warning it had received reports of DHS-themed "ransomware."

"Users who are being targeted by the ransomware receive an email message claiming that use of their computer has been suspended and that the user must pay a fine to unblock it," the warning said, adding that the ransomware falsely claims to be from the department and its National Cyber Security Division.

Ransomware is increasingly widespread malicious software that purports to encrypt a user's files and then demands payment to unlock them.

US-CERT urged users and systems administrations to use caution if they find a questionable email message that could contain the ransomware. It said to urge users not to click on the messages or submit any information to Web pages.

(AP Photo/Themba Hadebe, File)

(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius' appeal against his bail conditions will be heard on Thursday, a day after the culpable homicide trial of older brother Carl begins, a family lawyer told The Associated Press on Friday.

Advocate Kenny Oldwadge said they had confirmation from Pretoria's North Gauteng High Court that the appeal is scheduled for March 28 at the High Court, meaning the brothers will both likely have legal proceedings on the same day.

The Olympic athlete, charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last month, is challenging travel restrictions and having to report twice a week to a police station, among other conditions.

Oldwadge and prosecutors said Pistorius ? who hasn't been seen publicly since he was granted bail ? was not required to appear in court for the appeal.

The next part of the 26-year-old double-amputee runner's high-profile case ? which continues to grip South Africans and much of the world's media ? will now take place while brother Carl is in another court to defend himself against a culpable homicide charge for alleged negligent driving in the death of a 36-year-old woman in a road collision in 2008.

Carl was going to trial on Wednesday and Thursday in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court, south of Johannesburg, prosecutors said. The 28-year-old Carl denies the charges and Oldwadge said he would lead Carl's defense at the trial.

The concurrent dates for the Pistorius brothers had also stretched the family's legal team, Oldwadge said, and provided them with significant logistical problems.

"We didn't suggest it (the date for Oscar's appeal) but we were forced into it because of the need to get the appeal heard as soon as possible," Oldwadge said.

He said there was "no need" for Oscar to appear in court.

The multiple Paralympic champion's legal team filed an appeal against some of his bail conditions on March 7, objecting to him being not allowed to travel outside of South Africa even though a magistrate said he was not a flight risk when granting him 1 million rand ($108,000) bail last month. They're also challenging the alcohol ban and that Pistorius cannot speak with any residents at the Silverwoods Country Estate, where he shot Steenkamp dead in his house the early hours of Feb. 14.

Pistorius' lawyers say he should be able to consult with residents to be able to prepare his defense. They also object to the ruling that he has to report twice a week to the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria, where he was held after his arrest.

Pistorius denies murdering his girlfriend and says he shot her by mistake fearing an intruder was in his home. Prosecutors say he killed her intentionally following a loud argument in the early hours of Valentine's Day.

State prosecutors also believe they have a culpable homicide case against Carl, who they argue was driving negligently, National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Medupe Simasiku told the AP on Friday.

Simasiku said the older Pistorius brother was driving a Ford Ranger SUV in March 2008 when he collided with a female motorcyclist. The woman, Marietjie Barnard, died in a hospital.

"According to the investigation we have, there is a case against Pistorius," Simasiku said.

Simasiku, who is the spokesman for the prosecution in both Pistorius cases, said the scheduling of proceedings in both brothers' cases in the same week was not intentional.

"(Carl's trial) was scheduled way before Oscar," he said. "People may think ... that we were trying to run them concurrently."

NY town: OK to boo, politely, at board meetings

(AP) ? A New York town's board members have decided it's OK to boo at their meetings ? but only if it's done politely.

The Riverhead board voted to ban booing earlier this month. But Newsday reports (http://bit.ly/WVR9Rm ) that the board voted 4-1 on Tuesday to strike the anti-boo rule from the books.

The board on Long Island retained another part of its code. That part prohibits disruptive behavior and disruptive demonstrations.

No explanation was given on how to boo without being disruptive.

Councilman James Wooten says the town supervisor should be able to keep order at a meeting without written rules.

Supervisor Sean Walter defends the intent of the anti-booing rule. He says there are similar regulations in towns across New York state.

Nevertheless, you must not make the journey without taking a look at some of these precautionary measures:

i. Get a full health checkup: Before you begin your yatra, you must get a full health checkup. It is a precautionary move which would tell you your exact physical condition. If the checkup shows that you are not in a good shape, then you must not risk taking the journey. It is advisable that you ask your doctor about it. If he gives you the green signal to make the yatra, only then should you start to pack. In case, he doesnt give you a certificate of clearance, then you must try to get healthier for the next year.

ii. Get your fitness levels up: While going to the chardham yatra, you are also required to get fitter than you are presently. Even if your health is alright, your fitness may not be up to the mark. You can easily check this on your own. Try climbing the staircase of a high-storey building and see if you manage it easily or whether you begin to lose your breath! In case you get wearied and breathless, then you must start some sort of an exercise regimen to improve upon your fitness. During the yatra, you would need to do a lot of climbing. So, if your fitness is not high, then you would begin to get tired and out-of-breath very easily.

iii. Carry all the medicines: Even if you have got a fitness clearance from your doctor, you must not get complacent. The pills or capsules which you consume on a daily basis must be brought in adequate amounts till the entire journey gets completed. Do not come with the mindset that you would buy the medicines from the local place. These areas are not very well-developed and medical shops are few & far! Plus, you may not get the exact medicine you need. So, you must carry your medicine kit without fail.

iv. Get escorted by someone: It goes without saying that patients (whether young or old) must not travel alone. In the high altitudes, due to fluctuating temperatures & air pressure, you may turn dizzy or develop some other problems. It would be necessary that you are escorted by someone or your entire family during the chardham yatra.

Energy drinks will be prohibited to be sold to minors | Baltic News ...

Thursday, March 21, the parliament will be reviewing the Energy Drink Circulation Law and will be deciding on restrictions on sales of this product. It is planned to prohibit the selling of energy drinks to minors starting from 2014. It is also planned to limit the sale of this product in schools and other education institutions. Shops will be required to put energy drinks on separate shelves.

Restrictions will also apply to advertisements ? young people are not to be the target audience. Endocrinologist Iveta Dzivite-Krisane told LTV and Latvian Radio?s internet news portal that children are likely to become addicted to this sugary and caffeine rich type of drink.

?In my opinion as a doctor, I believe these drinks need to be limited and made unavailable for children. There have not been any children with acute changes in children, but theoretically speaking contents of energy drinks can cause changes in the metabolism of glucose and amino acids. Systematic consumption of these drinks could lead to serious health problems for children. Energy drinks should be prohibited for children. This is not about production. Energy drinks cause addiction if consumed on a regular basis, something sweets are unable to do,? ? the doctor says.

The sale of energy drinks is currently prohibited in Latvian schools. In the bill, energy drinks are defined as ?non-alcoholic drinks that contain stimulating substances or tonics, including caffeine, the total proportion of which among other ingredients exceeds 150 mg/l of carbohydrates, amino acids, minerals and vitamins, including B-group vitamins and other additives.?

Authors of the bill note that there is no single definition to ?energy drink? in the EU. Energy drinks are generally considered non-alcoholic drinks that contain sugar, caffeine and other additives like taurine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, and nicotinamide, vitamin B and different plant derivatives.

No country of the EU has full prohibition of energy drinks, but Germany, Bulgaria, Denmark, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Slovakia, Austria, Finland and Sweden have specific trade restrictions.

NFL passes helmet rule, ends tuck rule

(AP) ? If it was good enough for football's greatest running back, NFL owners figure, it should work in the 21st century.

Team owners passed a player safety rule Wednesday barring ball carriers from using the crown of their helmets to make forcible contact with a defender in the open field. Pittsburgh Steelers President Art Rooney put the change succinctly.

"Jim Brown never lowered his head," he said with a smile. "It can be done."

And according to the rules, it must be done beginning this season.

The second significant player safety rule passed this week to help protect defensive players came with much debate. Several coaches and team executives expressed concern about officiating the new rule, but Commissioner Roger Goodell championed it and it passed 31-1. Cincinnati voted no.

On Tuesday, the league took the peel-back block out of the game.

The changes were the latest involving safety, and head injuries in particular, with the issue receiving heightened attention amid hundreds of lawsuits filed by former players claiming that the NFL did not do enough to prevent concussions in years past. League officials have defended the NFL's record and did so again on Wednesday.

"I have always thought that player safety has been at the forefront of our discussion for a long, long time," said Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, co-chairman of the competition committee that recommends rule changes. "The game has gotten safer over time. Where we have really focused is on the big hits, the open field hits and hits where players truly can't defend themselves. In this step that we are taking we are trying to protect the player from himself with respect to this rule."

The tuck rule, one of the most criticized in pro football, was eliminated. Now, if a quarterback loses control of the ball before he has fully protected it after opting not to throw, it is a fumble.

The Steelers were the only team to vote against getting rid of the tuck rule. New England and Washington abstained.

Peel-back blocks had been legal inside the tackle box, but now players can't turn back toward their goal line and block an opponent low from behind anywhere on the field.

Video review now will be allowed when a coach challenges a play that he is not allowed to. But the coach will be penalized or lose a timeout, depending on when he threw the challenge flag.

That change stems from Houston's Thanksgiving victory over Detroit in which Lions coach Jim Schwartz challenged a touchdown run by the Texans' Justin Forsett. Although officials clearly missed Forsett being down by contact before breaking free on the 81-yard run, when Schwartz threw the red flag on a scoring play that automatically is reviewed, the referee could not go to replay.

That loophole has been eliminated.

Goodell was eager to get approved the competition committee's proposal to outlaw use of the crown of the helmet by ball carriers, and there was talk the vote would be tabled until May if the rule change didn't have enough support.

But after watching videos of the play that clearly showed the differences in legal and illegal moves by ball carriers, the owners voted yes ? and then applauded the decision, something Rams coach Jeff Fisher said is "rare."

"We had discussions with the players association and the players themselves, the coaches' subcommittee," said Fisher, co-chairman of the competition committee. "A lot of people talked to us about this rule and how to roll it out in our game."

The penalty will be 15 yards from the spot of the foul, and if the offensive and defensive players both lower their heads and use the crown of the helmet to make contact, each will be penalized.

"It'll certainly make our runners aware of what we expect relative to use of the helmet," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "One of the questions I ask a lot is who gains from this, offense or defense? And it's a toss-up as to which side of the ball has the advantage on this rule, if any. The main thing is it's pro-health and safety, and that's the big thing."

The owners discussed simply using fines on ball carriers to eliminate the tactic, but instead voted to make the rule change.

Goodell announced that the Pro Bowl will be held in Honolulu on Jan. 26, the Sunday before the Super Bowl. The commissioner has considered scrapping the all-star game, but was satisfied with the level of performance in this year's matchup, won 62-25 by the NFC.

He added that the system for choosing the players won't change, but some consideration has been given to having team captains select their rosters, rather than an AFC vs. NFC format.

The Rooney Rule that requires every team to interview at least one minority candidate when there is a coaching or general manager opening was discussed at length. This year, with eight coaching vacancies and seven for GMs, no minority candidates was hired.

Goodell said he was disappointed in those results and would like to see more flexibility when teams ask to interview candidates whose clubs still are playing.

"One of the major focuses we've had was that we are going to reinstate the symposium program that we've had in the past," Goodell said. "That was primarily focused on coaches but we are likely to have some potential GM candidates also attend with the coaches."

The owners also approved tight ends and H-backs wearing numbers between 40 and 49. Previously, they were supposed to have numbers in the 80s.

I do not really like my gals to watch tv but sometimes really it's a good kid-sitter :)
I try to get them craft wk, story books or inexpensive games to occupy them. We have Uno, Monopoly (kids version) n some cheap games at home. I much prefer my gals to interact with each other. I chanced upon Happy Family card game at SKP and bought it.
They are very happy to have something new n XC is quick to see that there is a technique to win easily.
Thru these games we played at home, I hope to bring out some values like respect and integrity. Not to forget, it is a good time for family bonding.

Teenage girls charged with online threats against Ohio rape victim

By Drew Singer

(Reuters) - Two teenage girls were arrested in Ohio on Monday and accused of using social media to threaten the young victim in a high-profile rape trial that concluded this past weekend, state Attorney General Mike DeWine said.

A 16-year-old girl is charged with aggravated menacing after using Twitter to threaten the life of the victim, DeWine said in a statement. A 15-year-old girl is charged with one count of menacing after making a threat on Facebook, he said.

The charges came a day after a juvenile court judge found Steubenville High School football players Trent Mays, 17, and Ma'lik Richmond, 16, delinquent in the August 12 sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl at a party while she was in a drunken stupor.

"Let me be clear," DeWine said on Monday in a statement. "Threatening a teenage rape victim will not be tolerated. If anyone makes a threat verbally or via the Internet, we will take it seriously, we will find you, and we will arrest you," he added.

WTRF, a local media outlet, reported that the two girls would appear before a juvenile court judge in Steubenville on Tuesday. Calls to DeWine's office seeking confirmation of the hearing were not returned on Monday.

A judge ordered Richmond held in a juvenile detention facility for at least one year and Mays for at least two years. The juvenile system could hold them until age 21. Both were required to register as juvenile sex offenders.

At a news conference on Sunday, DeWine said that he would seek a grand jury investigation into whether others should be charged in failing to report or stop the rape. Investigators interviewed 27 partygoers, but said that 16 others refused to cooperate.

GMG & Playfire Community Blog: Mitch Reviews: Tomb Raider

Does this reboot freshen up the series or are Lara?s days of treasure hunting finally over?

Story

Whilst it?s debatable as to whether or not previous Tomb Raider games had strong stories, I think everybody will agree that Lara?s latest outing is driven by a story worth knowing. You?re thrown straight into the thick of the action within minutes of booting the game up, experiencing an expedition gone wrong to find the elusive Japanese kingdom of Yamatai.

The thrill of excitement experienced within the first few minutes doesn?t wear off due to the well-paced story, character progression and unobtrusive set pieces. Being a reboot, we get to join Lara on her first adventure as we watch her become who we?re familiar with; the explorer we know her to be.

Characters are proven to be in-depth and as you collect journals and items, you learn more about other characters' histories as well as insights by Lara herself, giving her thoughts on the situation, the people she?s with and the emotional effect events have on her. Chances are, you?ll be thinking similar things to her due to how realistic the characters are and how easy it is to place yourself in their shoes.

Gameplay

One thing that stunned me in this game was the brutality and gore, the emphasis that Lara is only a young, untrained woman who?s vulnerable to the dangers of the outside world. With infamous QTEs making an appearance, you need to be quick to avoid instant death via strangulation and being crushed, impaled or murdered; the more sadistic of us may fail these entirely on purpose just to see what unfortunate ends Crystal Dynamics have cooked up for Lara. Luckily, the QTEs are unobtrusive but give you some control over the dynamically spectacular set pieces.

Gone are Lara?s trademark pistols, now replaced by an iconic bow and arrow. Whilst this is the most effective weapon in the game, you can also use a sole pistol, an assault rifle, a shotgun and a pickaxe for when you want to get down and dirty up-close.
These can be upgraded by finding materials in tombs and littered boxes which allow you to improve accuracy, strength, reload speed and various other things.

Platforming has had a major overhaul and thankfully, Lara can now jump smoothly like a normal person rather than the stiff and painful platforming segments we had to suffer during earlier Tomb Raider titles. Climbing feels smooth and efficient, with the new Rope Ascender tool allowing you to quickly soar to your desired destination or to escape enemy fire. It?s a shame that you?re unable to attack when climbing as I feel this could have mixed the gameplay up, but hopefully we?ll see a more aggressive Lara in a sequel.

Getting into cover is easy but you?ll find yourself sticking to things by accident as Lara sidles besides things when in close proximity rather than at the press of a button. You?re able to roll and slide into cover which is great during a firefight as Lara falls fairly quick if you try to be overly offensive, and it also allows you to evade molotovs which incapacitate you for a short period when it makes contact.

Graphics

Lara?s latest journey looks terrific and does its best to immerse you in the experience; the island theme is prominent and does a great job of making you feel stranded, alone and fragile.
The weather is dynamic and primarily features rain, which adds to the tension and mixes well with the darkness and blood that stains many locations. As someone who has been playing Tomb Raider since the first installment, I?m surprised to see how gritty and gory this one actually is but it?s definitely a positive as it allows us to care for Lara in a way that we never would have previously (you know, when she was a blow up doll with eyes glued on).

TressFX makes its first appearance in a game and makes its shining debut on the top of Lara?s head, giving her hair more the ability to portray itself realistically to hopefully become a multiplayer character or better yet, star in its own title in which it can grace our screens in all its glory. Hopefully we?ll see TressFX more in future now its proven itself. (James' note: TressFX totally sounds like a hair product.)

Audio

Voice-acting is top-notch, especially Camilla Luddington?s portrayal of Lara, and aids in relating to the characters and caring about what happens to them on the island as you can hear the stress and desperation as they discuss how to escape the cursed island.

Firearms sound awful and don?t pack a punch but, fortunately, the bow and arrow proves to be the best weapon available and comes with a satisfying ?ping!? sound. Explosions become background noise in the later parts of the game due to the immense amount of flammable barrels conveniently placed around the island.

The music itself is great but you won?t find yourself humming Tomb Raider tunes once you?ve finished the campaign, which is disappointing as a good soundtrack can change your outlook on a game and get your adrenaline pumping when played at the appropriate time.

Lasting Appeal

There?s a lot to see and do in the campaign including finding collectibles and journals and completing side-missions in the form of hidden tombs and when you feel that you?ve had your fill here, you can jump on the online multiplayer modes.

The multiplayer itself is lacking in comparison to the campaign with it being noticeably laggy and an awful matchmaking system where if someone leaves a game, you?ll have to be incredibly lucky to have that spot replaced without leaving the game and joining another. As is standard in most multiplayer titles, you are able to level up, unlock weapons, loadouts and perks and prestige once you hit a specific level. ?It may require a few patches before I can fully recommend the multiplayer segment of Tomb Raider; it?s good fun but it feels tacked on. Thankfully, this doesn?t detract from the steller single-player campaign.

Tomb Raider is an excellent reboot which I fully recommend - if mostly due to the single player - and the addition of multiplayer is just the icing on the cupcake.

Google Keep briefly teases note-taking utility for Drive, vanishes soon after

DNP

Another day, another leak from Google. As The Next Web reports, a note-collecting service called Keep was accessible on Google Drive for a short period of time last night -- and if your short-term memory is a bit cloudy, Drive itself got leaked in a similarly bizarre fashion before getting official last year. 1E100 had initially found source code, images and various links that seemed to point to Keep, which apparently went live soon after. Interestingly, while all of the links point to error pages, one redirects to a specific, unresolveable app url on Google Play. Android Police was able to snag some screenshots of the web app in action -- albeit disconnected from Drive at the time -- noting that it's reminiscent of Mountain View's late Notebook service that was killed in '09. Whether the likes of Evernote will have to worry remains to be seen, but the added functionality to Drive will certainly be appreciated -- now, how about letting us get at that Now app for iOS?
