Scorsese becomes first filmmaker to deliver Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Martin Scorsese has been tapped to deliver the 2013 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities.

The Oscar-winning director of "The Departed" and "Raging Bull" will hold forth on his career as one of the foremost chroniclers of Catholic guilt, violence and criminality in the annual talk sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Scorsese is the first filmmaker to get the honor, a prestigious forum that in the past has drawn such leading figures in the arts and academia as Toni Morrison, Robert Penn Warren and Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust. It carries with it a $10,000 honorarium.

"Martin Scorsese is a scholar of, advocate for, and icon of American cinema," said NEH Chairman Jim Leach in a statement. "He is the first filmmaker designated as a Jefferson Lecturer, but he follows in the tradition of earlier speakers like John Updike, Barbara Tuchman, and Arthur Miller in revealing a profound understanding and empathy for the human condition."

Scorsese will present the lecture on April 1 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Scorsese has directed and produced more than 50 films, including such classics as "Goodfellas," "Mean Streets" and "Taxi Driver." He is currently working with Leonardo DiCaprio on "The Wolf of Wall Street," which will tell the true story of a New York stockbroker who becomes embroiled in a securities fraud case.

Tabloid slams novelist Mantel over Kate comments

LONDON (AP) ? A novelist, a duchess and a tabloid newspaper have made an explosive combination in Britain.

The Daily Mail on Tuesday ran a front-page broadside against two-time Booker Prize-winner Hilary Mantel for her "venomous attack" on the former Kate Middleton.

In a speech earlier this month, Mantel characterized the wife of Prince William as "a jointed doll on which certain rags were hung ... a shop-window mannequin."

Mantel said that as a royal consort, Kate "appeared to have been designed by committee and built by craftsmen, with a perfect plastic smile and the spindles of her limbs hand-turned and gloss-varnished."

Mantel's speech, reprinted this week in the London Review of Books, was about the British public's complex relationship with royalty over the centuries ? a relationship both symbiotic and voyeuristic.

The speech looked at the way the public and the press glorify and destroy royals, from Anne Boleyn to Princess Diana, casting them in roles and stories in which "adulation can swing to persecution, within hours."

But for the Daily Mail, this became "an astonishing and venomous attack on the Duchess of Cambridge."

The newspaper's front page juxtaposed pictures of the author and the duchess alongside the front-page headline "A plastic princess designed to breed."

It quoted Mantel's speech at length, though did not note that Mantel was describing what she saw as a view of Kate constructed by the press and public opinion.

Online reaction was divided, with some slamming Mantel but others defending her words as provocative and thoughtful.

Even Prime Minister David Cameron ? on a trip to India ? commented about the affair. The Press Association news agency reported that he called Mantel's comments "completely misguided and completely wrong."

Others argued that Mantel's real target was not Kate, but the press. On the Daily Telegraph website, journalist Catherine Scott said Mantel's speech was "an attack on how some parts of the media canonize royal women ... while also rendering them voiceless and purposeless."

The royal couple's office declined to comment.

Meanwhile, a large media presence was on hand to record the duchess as she visited a center for recovering addicts Tuesday in one of her first public appearances since announcing in December that she was pregnant. News reports commented on the 31-year-old duchess's baby bump and Max Mara dress.

Mantel, 60, won the prestigious Booker Prize in 2009 and 2012 for "Wolf Hall" and "Bring Up the Bodies," novels set at the court of King Henry VIII and centered on the king's search for a queen who will give him a male heir.

Her speech touched on royal figures from Henry's wife Anne Boleyn to Kate.

Mantel said Diana "passed through trials, through ordeals at the world's hands." Prince Harry "doesn't know which he is, a person or a prince" ? a confusion Harry himself recently remarked on.

And Kate, whose first child is due in July, finds herself cast by the press as someone whose "only point and purpose (is) to give birth."

Of the royal family, she said that "however airy the enclosure they inhabit, it's still a cage."

Mantel ended her speech ? ironically, given the media furor ? with a plea for us all "to back off and not be brutes."

Connectors (lines and arrows) in Google drawings

There is no automatic way to create a right-angled line. The best way to do this would be to:

  1. Create 2 intersecting lines. I think you mention this in your 1st bullet. One way to make sure that the lines are perpendicular to each other is to hold the Shift key down while dragging out the line. This will automatically "snap" it to a preset angle (0, 45, 90 degrees, etc). By making 2 lines perpendicular you could make the ends meet and create a right angle line.
  2. Use the polyline tool. You can find this by clicking on the drop down arrow next to the line icon. This menu will allow you to create lines of different types. Examples are:

Some of these new lines (not all) will allow you to attach the ends to the connection point of another shape (like a text box) but you'll have to fiddle around with it to find what solution works best for you.

If you're looking to create formal flowcharts with Google Drive, there are now apps you can connect to your Drive account that will help you create flowcharts. Examples include Lucidchart and Draw.io. To connect these apps to your Drive account, go into your Drive and click Create > Connect more apps

Whales benefit from action on noise

Scientists are working to reduce the noise levels experienced by whales from North Atlantic shipping.

The blare is making it difficult for the animals to communicate with each other, which in turn is affecting their ability to find food and mates.

The researchers have persuaded shipping companies to change their routes in and around the Boston area.

Sea captains use an iPad App that helps them to understand the locations of the whales and when to slow down.

The change in operations has helped to lower the din. Scientists hope it will also limit the number accidental collisions.

The waters off New England are a home to many species of whale. Many are now suffering because of increased noise levels.

Research presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) suggests that it has doubled each decade over the past 30 years.

The big din

Dr Mark Baumgartner of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution played me the sound of a passing container ship as a whale might hear it.

It was a thunderous, unchanging drone.

"How would you like to have that in your bedroom, your kitchen, your work all the time?" he asked plaintively. "That's what the acoustic environment for whales is like all the time."

The effect is to reduce the range whales can communicate.

"It's as if you are talking at a cocktail party and all of a sudden it is hard to hear because there is all this background noise. A couple of words get dropped, you don't get the meaning of everything that is said to you," says Dr Baumgartner.

"That it what it is like for a lot of whales in the ocean right now."

There is so much commercial shipping activity and it is so loud that scientists are starting to worry about the effect that the noise is having on the whales.

Ship strikes

Social communication is necessary so that they can get together for important activities, such as mating, and it is unclear just what the ramifications of cutting off that communication will mean for them.

But the ships are not just disrupting communication; they also collide with whales from time to time.

Dr Dave Wiley who works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has seen the consequences at first hand.

"Our scientists found shattered bone and large hematomas which are indicative of a ship strike," he told BBC News.

Each year, there are one or two North Atlantic Right Whales stuck by ships in the area. Although that does not sound like a lot, it was enough to concern environmental groups because it is thought that there are just 500 of these animals left in the wild and mothers with calves get hit more frequently.

Whale maps

Dr Wiley and his team worked with the Boston port authorities to find a solution to the problem.

They shared their data of where the whales were and the details of the commercial shipping lanes.

Together, they worked out a new route that would reduce the co-occurrence of whales and ships by 81% and increased the transit time of ships by between nine and 22 minutes.

The new route was accepted by the International Maritime Organization, since when the ships have been using it voluntarily.

Dr Wiley also helped to develop a new iPad application that gives real-time information on the location of whales across the entire East Coast of America so that ships can avoid the large gatherings of the cetaceans.

General acceptance

Boston's vast port nestles close to the skyscrapers of the city's financial district. 1,500 vessels come in and out of here each month, mostly large container ships carrying gas and petroleum products.

Thousands of jobs depend on the commerce here, yet many companies are telling their captains to use the Whale App and the route change.

Andy Hammond, chief executive director of the Boston Harbour Pilots Association, says that the industry has realised that for a little inconvenience they can do an awful lot for whales.

"There was a little bit of resistance at first when they talked about speed reductions," he said. "Oddly enough, we found since they've implemented this, ships have slowed down an awful lot anyway. Initially, I think there was pushback but once they realised that it didn't affect this port that much, they've accepted it."

Genetically modified crops are overregulated, food science expert says

Feb. 17, 2013 ? It has been almost 20 years since the first genetically modified foods showed up in produce aisles throughout the United States and the rest of the world, but controversy continues to surround the products and their regulation.

Bruce Chassy, a professor emeritus of food science and human nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, believes that after thousands of research studies and worldwide planting, "genetically modified foods pose no special risks to consumers or the environment" and are overregulated.

Chassy elaborated on this conclusion at the 2013 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston on Feb. 17. During his talk, "Regulating the Safety of Foods and Feeds Derived From Genetically Modified Crops," Chassy shared his view that the overregulation of GM crops actually hurts the environment, reduces global health and burdens the consumer.

Farmers have witnessed the advantages of GM crops firsthand through increases in their yields and profit, and decreases in their labor, energy consumption, pesticide use and greenhouse gas emissions, Chassy said.

Despite these benefits, various regulatory agencies require newly developed GM crops to be put to the test with rigorous safety evaluations that include molecular characterization, toxicological evaluation, allergenicity assessments, compositional analysis and feeding studies. This extensive testing takes five to 10 years and costs tens of millions of dollars, and Chassy argues that this process "wastes resources and diverts attention from real food safety issues."

"With more than half of the world's population now living in countries that have adopted GM crops, it might be appropriate to reduce the regulatory scrutiny of GM crops to a level that is commensurate with science-based risk assessment," Chassy said.

During his talk, Chassy chronicled the scientific tests used in pre-market safety assessments of GM foods and elaborate on the evidence from thousands of research studies and expansive GM plantings that he says show these crops do not present risks to consumers or the environment. The overregulation of GM foods is a response not to scientific evidence, Chassy said, but to a global campaign that disseminates misinformation and fear about these food sources.

I really like the idea of this RP, but when I read the introduction page, I felt a bit disappointed. If you plan on doing an RP about people who don't fit into any category, than you shouldn't force the RP'ers to play stereotypical/categorized characters that are per-ordained to act a certain way. If you want your characters to be unique misfits, than they should be misfits, not stereotypes. I'm not trying to demean your idea at all, you really seem to have all your ducks in a row with this, and I have no doubt every spot will most likely get filled. I'm just, Saiyan.

EDIT: Just saw this was based on a movie, that explains it much more. I've never seen the movie, but if the premise is the same as this RP, than I might have to check it out.

Well yes I was basing it off a movie that is why I put a little something about each character. I dont mind changing it up but I like to keep where the relationships are at. I dont mind changing the description that I put either I just have a plot in mind and each character has a role in the plot.

I very much recommened watching the movie, its awesome

Football: Totti's rocket hands Roma precious win over Juventus

MILAN: Francesco Totti hit a 25-metre rocket for Roma to seal a precious 1-0 win over Juventus and hand the leaders only their fourth defeat of the campaign Saturday.

Juve, fresh from a precious 3-0 Champions League win away to Celtic, had Claudio Marchisio and Federico Peluso suspended and also Giorgio Chiellini, Paolo De Ceglie and Nicklas Bendtner out through injury.

Bianconeri coach Antonio Conte welcomed Kwadwo Asamoah back from the African Cup of Nations although the Ghanaian midfielder was replaced as fatigue set in midway through the second half.

But barely two weeks after taking over from sacked Roma head coach Zdenek Zeman, caretaker Aurelio Andreazzoli switched from a 4-3-3 to a 3-4-2-1 with Erik Lamela and Totti supporting striker Pablo Osvaldo.

Juve came to Rome with realistic hopes of taking three points from a side that had claimed only two from their last seven games.

However, the crisis seemed to galvanise the Giallorossi, who held their own in the first half and completely dominated the champions after the interval when they should have put several past keeper Gianluigi Buffon.

There was little to talk of in the opening half.

Roma striker Pablo Osvaldo should have done better with an early opportunity which he shot straight at Buffon.

Juve were given a chance to test Maarten Stekelenburg from distance when Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi upended Stephan Lichsteiner when the Swiss midfielder was in possession in front of the area.

It took a superb parry from the outstretched Stekelenburg to stop Andrea Pirlo's curling free kick from sneaking in at the bottom corner.

Osvaldo ran on to Totti's pass minutes into the second half but, under pressure, sent a low angled shot wide of Buffon's upright.

At the other end, a long ball to Paul Pogba in the Roma area caused panic with the attempted clearance falling to Mirko Vucinic, who sent a volley just wide of Stekelenburg's post.

Juventus dominated the early exchanges, but Roma should have taken the lead when Osvaldo rose to meet an incisive pass from the right of the area only to send a bullet header straight at Buffon.

Conte made a double substitution just before the hour with Sebastian Giovinco and Simone Padoin replacing Vucinic and Asamoah respetively.

Minutes later, Totti made the Olympic stadium erupt when he pounced on the rebound from a freekick 30 metres out to hit a superb first-time drive past the helpless Buffon.

Roma should have doubled their lead minutes later but De Rossi mis-hit Vassilas Torosidis's delivery into the area after a long run upfield in possession.

Juve seemed in trouble and Conte replaced Arturo Vidal with Nicolas Anelka, handing the Frenchman his debut after his recent move from Shanghai Shenhua.

But despite Stekelenburg scaring the hosts when he mishandled Giovinco's probing cross from the left, Juve were lucky not to be further punished by the hosts.

Earlier, a 55th minute penalty from French striker Cyril Thereau secured a share of the points for Chievo at home to Palermo.

Palermo took a shock fifth-minute lead thanks to Mauro Formica's superb angled strike but Thereau converted from the spot after Palermo defender Santiago Garcia handled in the box.

Juve's defeat gives second-placed Napoli a chance to close the gap to just two points when they host Sampdoria in Sunday's early game.

White House: 'Grave concern' on delayed nominees

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The new White House chief of staff says there's "a grave concern" about delays in assembling President Barack Obama's second-term national security team.

Senate Republicans have stalled the nominations of Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary and John Brennan to be CIA director.

GOP lawmakers want more answers about the White House's handling of the Sept. 11 attack on a diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya ? but Hagel had no role in that crisis.

Obama aide Denis McDonough says Hagel, a Vietnam combat veteran and a former Republican senator, is well-qualified to lead the Pentagon. McDonough says Hagel "has one thing in mind: 'How do we protect the country?'"

As for Brennan, Republicans are demanding more details about Benghazi and about drone strikes against suspected terrorists.

Nokia rumored to join Apple in dumping Samsung as a supplier

With Apple known to be working overtime in its efforts to reduce its dependance on Samsung as a component supplier, word comes that other companies, including Nokia, are also considering plans to do the same thing, for similar reasons.

Apple's tight business partnership with Samsung became severely strained after the Korean electronics conglomerate initiated efforts to closely duplicate the success of the iPhone 3GS in 2010, followed by Samsung's subsequent cloning of the iPad and iPod touch under its "Galaxy" brand.

While Apple remains Samsung's largest customer (and Samsung a critical source of Apple's components), there are clear indications that the iPhone maker is seeking to shift its business to other component manufacturers and chip fabs, the same way that Apple has worked to divorce itself from dependance on Google for maps and other online services.

And just as Apple isn't the only company that has left behind Google Maps, "Apple isn't the only one moving away from Samsung," a well connected hardware industry source tells AppleInsider.

Supplier turned competitor

Among the companies evaluating their alternatives is Nokia, the world's second largest phone maker after Samsung. Gartner credits Nokia with selling 85 million phones in Q4 2012, nearly twice the number of iPhones Apple sold (43.5 million) and about 80 percent of the almost 107 million phones Samsung sold.

Together, Apple, Nokia and Samsung built just over half of the world's phones sold in the quarter, and Samsung accounted for almost half of that number. Samsung not only builds the most phones, but it also builds much of the memory chips, processors, displays and other components that other vendors use, albeit making far more of its profits from finished phones compared to its component sales.

Samsung's interest in entering the much more profitable smartphone business explains why its System LSI subsidiary (which builds chips, and is distinct and removed from the company's phone development operations) launched an "iPhone effect analysis," in September 2007, observing that the "hardware portion" of Apple's iPhone would offer "easy imitation."

Samsung's System LSI had access to Apple's confidential semiconductor orders, but wasn't in charge of designing or building Samsung's phones, a fact highlighted in Apple's case against Samsung.

"Samsung copied Apple's four years of work without taking any of the risks," Apple's attorney stated, directing attention to another internal document from March 2010 that presented 100 pages of "detailed instructions of what to copy," several of which were Apple's patented features, including its double tap to zoom utility patent and a icons with a 3D lighting effect.

Samsung's "Firewall of Kimchi"

While the evidence that Samsung was methodically copying its largest customer's products only became public after Apple sued to stop Samsung, sources within other companies indicate that Samsung has behaved similarly with its other customers.

Fearing potential consequences to its component business, Samsung has made efforts to emphasize the presence of a "strict internal firewall" between its component fabrication operations and its its smartphone business.

Samsung's "'firewall' between component sales and smartphones is about as sturdy as a pile of kimchi"An unnamed Samsung executive told Reuters last fall that Samsung considered its supply contract with Apple a "separate issue from the litigation," and noted that this "strict internal firewall" had been erected to "avoid potential conflicts of interest" with its major customers like Apple. However, Apple isn't alone in being skeptical of the security of Samsung's "internal firewall."

"The 'firewall' between component sales and smartphones [at Samsung]," individual familiar with Nokia's component orders from Samsung states, is "about as sturdy as a pile of kimchi."

The individual stated that Samsung has "a record of getting orders for next-gen components, then canceling the orders. And then they show up in a Samsung phone. When you see a Samsung (certain specialized new design for) OLED phone as you surely will, you are looking at something that was stolen from Nokia."

In January, Samsung said it will not reduce capital investments this year, despite concerns around losing Apple's business. The company also warned that "the furious growth spurt seen in the global smartphone market last year is expected to be pacified by intensifying price competition."

Samsung has been recently portrayed as if it were actually a scrappy young underdog to Apple, and new to the smartphone and tablet markets rather than representing the status quo of the stagnant smartphones market that existed before the iPhone. The increasing visibility of Samsung's public relations efforts appears to highlight a growing concern within the company of losing its component customers.

3 yr-old still under critical condition after house goes up in flames ...

News 12 11 o'clock/Monday, Feb. 11, 2013

Augusta, GA. (WRDW)-- A baby and his family need your help after a fire. Sadly, little John Thompson is not doing very well. The 3 year-old is still on a respirator and in critical condition. The family says they need a lot of help, but they say what they need most are prayers.

"Should he survive. He will never be the same little John that we once new" said James Cato, a uncle of the toddler.

The baby survived the house fire. However, the toddler isn't the only one who escaped. 62 year-old Sandra Cato also survived, but her son, James says she's still trying to grasp what happened.

"I don't think she's fully aware of what's going on. She's taking it pretty hard. She doesn't care about the house, she's just focused on the baby" said Cato.

The 3 year-old suffered smoke inhalation and went 28 minutes without oxygen. Doctors have the toddler on medicine to help his heart beat and they are still trying to determine the extent of his brain damage, but despite all this bad news, Cato is still positive.

"I'm thankful there's still hope for little John" said Cato.

The fire started in the kitchen quickly consuming the house. The flames were closing in on baby John's room when a firefighter pulled him out.. The family says a quick thinking relative jumped out of this window and then used this hose to fight the fire. It all happened fast.

"It takes just a matter of minutes. 13 minutes and this house was completely destroyed. 13 minutes" said Cato.

Sandra Cato owns the house, but she did not have homeowners insurance. Her son, James says she left with what she had on. They have set up the Cato Family Recovery Fund and anyone can make a donation at any Regions Bank, but again if you can't give, the family says please pray for them, and especially baby John.

Were health care workers in Nigeria murdered for doling out polio vaccines?

The Islamist militant group Boko Haram is thought to be behind the recent gruesome attacks. But suspicion about vaccination campaigns has deeper historical roots in northern Nigeria, writes John Campbell.

On Feb. 8, unidentified gunmen killed four health workers and injured three others at a site in the Kano state of northern Nigeria, according to the media.? In what may have been part of?a coordinated attack, at about the same time a separate set of gunmen killed an additional five health workers at another site. The health workers were all involved in a?polio vaccination campaign.

In a third incident in the same time frame,?gunmen killed three foreign medical doctors?in Yobe state. One physician was beheaded, and all three had machete wounds. The three medical doctors were identified as North Koreans living in Yobe as part of a state-sponsored technical exchange. Press reports do not indicate whether the three were also involved in the polio immunization campaign.

In the aftermath of these killings, the inspector general of police has ordered ?special security? for those involved in the polio immunization campaign.

Commentators, including Senator Bukola Saraki, a former governor of the western Kwara state and former chairman of the Governors Forum, and the national chairman of Journalists Against Polio, see the murders as inevitably setting back the polio immunization campaign. Kano has the largest number of polio cases in Nigeria, which is itself one of only?three countries that still have a reservoir of the virus.

According to the press, security operatives believe the Islamist militant group Boko Haram is responsible for the murders.? However, following the usual pattern in the aftermath of attacks over the past several weeks, no one has claimed responsibility.

Opposition to the polio vaccination is longstanding on the basis that it is a Western and Christian plot sponsored by the Nigerian federal government in Abuja to limit Muslim births. It is a radical Islamist cause that builds on opposition dating back to controversial pharmaceutical trials by the American company Pfizer in the 1990s.

There are anecdotal reports that many mothers continue to avoid vaccination for their male children.?In 2003, an earlier World Health Organization vaccination campaign was halted because of popular outcry when minute traces of estrogen were found in the vaccine. The campaign only restarted a year later when an ?Islamic? source of vaccine was identified (Malaysia) and pressure was exerted by Saudi Arabia, the Organization of the Islamic Conference, and Western donors, including the United States.?

While the vaccination campaign was suspended, polio of Nigerian origin reportedly spread to seventeen countries previously free of the disease, including Indonesia. More recently, Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has strongly supported the polio vaccination campaign. Even so, progress towards eradication remains slow. Nigerian commentators are right when they say that the campaign will surely suffer set backs as a result of the murders.

Bus hits overpass in Boston, injuring dozens

BOSTON (AP) ? A charter bus carrying high school students from Pennsylvania crashed when it attempted to pass under a low bridge in Boston on Saturday night, injuring more than 30 people, several seriously, and leaving some trapped inside for hours, authorities said.

The students had been in the area to visit Harvard University. The bus, which was carrying 42 students and adult chaperones, was heading back to the Philadelphia area when it struck an overpass on Soldier's Field Road, a major crosstown road, at around 7:30 p.m., Massachusetts State Police said.

Authorities said the Calvary Coach bus did not belong on that road, which was not authorized for over-sized vehicles, and State Police were investigating whether charges were warranted against the driver, who apparently failed to see a sign prohibiting the vehicle from taking that route.

Ray Talmedge, owner of the Philadelphia-based Calvary Coach Bus company, said his driver was being interviewed by police. Talmedge said the driver, who also drives a school bus, didn't know about the road restrictions.

The students were part of a Destined for a Dream Foundation group, Talmedge said. Officials with the Bristol, Pa.-based group, a nonprofit that helps underprivileged youth, had no immediate comment on the crash.

The group's Facebook page said the trip to Harvard was to "visit the campus, sit with the office of cultural advancement, followed by a tour of the campus ... followed by Harvard Square (shopping, eating, site seeing...etc...) This should be a fun time for all!"

The bus suffered significant damage in the crash.

State police said at least 32 people were injured, including three seriously. Photos posted on the Fire Department's website showed firefighters standing on the top of the bus using boards to extract people. The last victim was freed from the bus around 9 p.m., according to the department.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority sent buses to pick up non-injured passengers and get them out of the frigid temperatures.

Soldiers Field Road curves along the Charles River and passes by Harvard and Boston University. It is a major roadway to the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Mickelson misses chance for tour 36-hole record

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Phil Mickelson had a perfect view of his birdie putt for a 59 that curled 180 degrees and stayed out in the first round of the Phoenix Open.

He missed the fateful last bounce of the shot that robbed him of another chance at history Friday in the second round.

"I still thought it was up," Mickelson said.

It wasn't.

His final drive tumbled into the water, and he made a double bogey that left him a stroke off the tour record for the first two rounds of a tournament set by Pat Perez in the 2009 Bob Hope Classic and matched by David Toms at Colonial in 2011.

"You always remember kind of the last hole, the last putt," Mickelson said. "But I think it's very possible that's going to help me because it's got me refocused, that I cannot ease up on a single shot. I've got to be really focused. These guys are going to make a lot of birdies and I've got to get after it and cannot make those kinds of mistakes."

Mickelson followed his opening 60 with a 65 to reach 17-under 125, a mark that matched the Phoenix Open 36-hole record set by Mark Calcavecchia in 2001.

"Unfortunately, I made a double on the last hole and didn't finish the way I wanted to," Mickelson said. "But I think it's a good example of what can happen on this course. You can make a lot of birdies and eagles, make up a lot of ground, but there's a lot of water and trouble there that if you misstep you can easily make bogeys and double."

His drive on No. 18 bounced into the left-side water hazard and, after a penalty drop, he still had a chance to get up and down for par and the record. But he didn't get enough on his approach shot, with the ball landing on the green and rolling off the front edge. His chip got away from him a bit, running 7 feet past, and his bogey putt slid by to the left.

"I hit a good shot, I thought," Mickelson said. "I tried to start it right down the middle and hold it into the wind. It just leaked a little bit left. I still thought it was up. ... Then I hit a poor wedge from there. But the tee shot I didn't think was going to be in the water at any point."

The double bogey left him four strokes ahead of Bill Haas and five in front of Keegan Bradley and Brandt Snedeker. Haas shot a 64, Bradley 63, and Snedeker 66.

Mickelson will play alongside Haas and Bradley in the third round.

"Bill and I have played on a Presidents Cup team, and Keegan and I have been partners in the Ryder Cup and had an incredibly emotional and fun experience together as partners," Mickelson said. "We're going to have a fun day tomorrow."

Mickelson, the winner at TPC Scottsdale in 1996 and 2005, parred the first six holes and played the next 11 in 8 under before the lapse on 18.

The 42-year-old former Arizona State star made a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-4 ninth ? the hole where he missed the putt for a 59 on Thursday ? and overpowered the par-5 15th for an eagle, hitting to 4 feet after a 358-yard drive.

"I felt really comfortable on the tee box, so I kind of let one go and caught a hold of it and ended up having 191 to the pin," Mickelson said. "It was only 186 to the front, and I hit a hard 8-iron. There was a little bit of helping wind."

After a par on the par-3 16th that drew boos from the rowdy fans on the stadium hole when his tee shot trickled into the fringe, he drove the green on the 344-yard 17th and two-putted from 70 feet ? leaving his eagle try a foot short ? for birdie.

Bradley also eagled the 15th, hitting a 350-yard drive and a 7-iron approach to 8 feet.

"I just smashed a driver down there," Bradley said. "I had been hitting 3-wood and I'm driving the ball so well that I just decided to rip driver down there."

He birdied the 16th, hitting to 5 feet.

"It reminds me of when I go to Fenway Park," Bradley said. "There's always like a murmur. ... It's really cool. I dig it. I wish there was more holes like that out here."

Haas began play on No. 10 and made the turn at 6-under 30.

"We all know the way the course is playing, if there's no wind on the weekend, you've just got to keep making birdies," Haas said.

Last year in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera, Haas beat Mickelson and Bradley with a 45-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff.

"It's just another day. It's moving day," Haas said. "Hopefully, I can move up the leaderboard and he (Mickelson) doesn't go too crazy."

DIVOTS: Jason Dufner, paired with Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, missed the cut by a stroke to end the tour's longest active streak at 22. Dufner shot 68-71, leaving Ian Poulter with the longest current streak at 16. Fowler also shot 68-71 to drop out. ... Golf Channel will have "spotlight" coverage" of the 15th, 16th and 17th holes Saturday and Sunday, opposite the first two hours of NBC's regular broadcast. The sister networks will stagger commercial breaks.

Pocket Casts 4 to hit Google Play in February, and it's awesome

Android Central

It's been a long old time since the last Pocket Casts update, but the developers, Shifty Jelly, have today published some details on the next version of their incredibly popular podcatching application. They've been working on it now for some six months -- they are just a three man team, after all -- and what they're bringing to the table goes beyond the realms of a minor version bump. It's a complete redesign of the app. We're currently involved in beta testing the new version, and all we can say is, it's pretty awesome.

The redesign takes in the latest Android design guidelines, and will also include proper tablet support. Shifty Jelly has specifically targeted the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10, so it should look great on large and small tablets. Equally exciting is the cross-device syncing and remote backup promised.

Syncing will cover subscriptions, playlists and even play states on each of your Android devices. So, you're heading home from work listening to the latest Android Central podcast, but you don't finish by the time you get to the front door. Just head inside, pick up your tablet, and carry on where you left off. We're really excited for this feature.

There's still a lot of stuff in Pocket Casts 4 that hasn't been shared yet, and won't be until it sees release. The good news is that Shifty Jelly intends to ship Pocket Casts 4 as a free update to the existing app sometime in February. We can't wait.

Alaska Airlines pilot passes out midair, co-pilot lands plane

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A Seattle-bound Alaska Airlines flight made an emergency landing in Oregon after its veteran pilot passed out in the passenger cabin, in the second such fainting spell involving the U.S. carrier in 10 days, the airline said on Friday.

Flight crew and passengers helped revive the pilot and guide him into a vacant passenger seat, while the co-pilot took control of the Boeing 737-700 and safely landed in Portland late on Thursday, airline spokesman Paul McElroy said.

"Doctors suspect he became ill due to food poisoning or the flu virus," McElroy said of the pilot, a 28-year aviation veteran, adding that none of the 116 passengers and five crew members on board the flight from Los Angeles was injured.

The pilot was hospitalized in Portland, and McElroy said the two fainting episodes were a "bizarre coincidence."

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said investigators did not immediately see a connection between the incident and a situation on January 22 in which an Alaska Airlines co-pilot fainted on a flight between Seattle and Las Vegas, forcing the captain to make an emergency landing.

"That first officer was infected with the flu. We know that for sure," McElroy said.

Hylan Slobodkin, a Seattle-area rabbi who was traveling with his wife, said he saw the pilot fall and hit his head and then heard a flight attendant call for help.

"There definitely were some passengers panicking," Slobodkin said. "But the plane never lunged, it never veered off track, it seemed really steady."
